Canoe from Great Pond to Messalonskee Lake
Enter Great Pond via the public boat landing just south of Belgrade Lakes Village, off Rt 27. Follow the west shore of Great Pond to the beginning of Great Pond Stream which leads to Belgrade Lakes Village and Great Pond Dam, where hundreds of ducks gather during the summer months. Make a very short portage across Rt 27 to Long Pond.
Travel south on Long Pond under the Castle Island bridge and past many scenic islands (great places to picnic). At the very south end of Long Pond enter a continuation of Great Pond Stream to the dam at Wings Mills. Make a very short portage across the road (around the dam) and continue down the stream to Messalonskee Lake. As you enter into Messalonskee Lake, under the bridge on Rt 27, the public boat launch is on your right. Leave a second vehicle at this boat launch or arrange for a pick up.

Kennebec Highlands
In 1998 the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance (BRCA) initiated project to protect the Kennebec Highlands area in Rome, Mount Vernon, Vienna, and New Sharon. The Kennebec Highlands' 6,000 acres contain the highest peaks in Kennebec County, miles of pristine streams, several wetlands, and five undeveloped ponds. Miles of trails in the highlands provide access for hiking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting,
fishing and a host of other outdoor pursuits. Trailheads for the Sanders Hill Loop and the Round Top Trail are located off Watson Pond Road in Rome. BRCA members receive a free copy of the color BRCA Trail Map and Guide to the Kennebec Highlands. These maps may also be purchased at the BRCA office in Belgrade Lakes Village (above the post office)
