Water Quality Initiative Community Meeting
6 p.m. - March 4, 2015
Maine Lakes Resource Center
If you love the Belgrade Lakes, please join us on Wednesday March 4th at 6 p.m. at the Maine Lakes Resource Center for an important community meeting to discuss our Water Quality Initiative.
Our lakes are threatened by excess phosphorus which, left unchecked, may soon lead to algae blooms. Last month, the Belgrade Lakes Association hosted well known water quality expert Ken Wagner who gave an overview of the issues in our lakes. If you were not able to attend Dr. Wagner’s presentation, you can view a video of it:
The March 4th meeting follows up on some of the issues raised by Dr. Wagner, especially our need to have a complete set of scientific data to guide our decision making process.
At this meeting, we will discuss how the Maine Lakes Resource Center is partnering with Colby College, the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance, the Belgrade Lakes Association, Friends of Messalonskee, North Pond Association, East Pond Association, McGrath Pond/Salmon Lake Association and the Maine Lakes Society in taking thoughtful action to save our lakes. Colby Professor Whitney King will present our plans to collect and analyze data from all seven lakes over this spring, summer, and fall to inform our decisions regarding making appropriate remediation strategies. Our plan includes regular updates on data collected so that the community will be kept informed of our progress in real time.
We invite you to become a part of our Water Quality Initiative by attending this public meeting and others to follow and by taking the time to understand the complex issues we must address as a community. We encourage anyone who is interested in preserving our lakes to attend. Please feel free to share this information with others.
We look forward to seeing you at the MLRC on March 4th!

The 2015 General Tire Summit Cup will be held on Belgrade Lakes from August 25 to August 30, 2015. Thirty Major League Fishing pros will start the competition with a Day One Elimination Round on Messalonskee Lake. During the competition, several other lakes will also be fished. The Belgrade Lakes chain offers superb black bass fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass.
In an article on their website, Major League Fishing states the Belgrade Chain offers some of the best black bass fishing to be found in the entire New England region. . . . . The bottom line at this Summit Cup in Maine would appear to be . . . some of the best and most exciting tournament fishing action of the year, regardless of the location.
